Modafinil is used to promote wakefulness (help people stay awake). It can cause skin reactions that may be severe enough to need treatment in a hospital. The exact way it works is not fully understood, stop taking modafinil and get emergency medical help if you have, but it most likely interacts with some chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine. Modafinil-containing medicines are used in patients who suffer from excessive sleepiness. Excessive sleepiness can be caused by narcolepsy, a disease that causes the person to fall asleep during the day. It is usually taken each morning to prevent daytime sleepiness.

This can be seen in people who work a shift-pattern or in those who suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea (a condition in which pauses in breathing occur repeatedly during the night, disturbing sleep). Modafinil will not cure obstructive sleep apnea or treat its underlying causes. Excessive sleepiness can also happen with no known causes (idiopathic hypersomnia). Follow your doctor’s instructions about all your other treatments for this disorder. Modafinil is a drug of abuse and you should be aware if anyone is using your medicine improperly or without a prescription. Keep track of the amount of medicine used from each new bottle.
