The medicine is available in 100mcg, 200mcg and 400mcg dosages. Depending on your medical history and the severity of your symptoms, your doctor will prescribe the most appropriate dosage for you.
It is only available on prescription and can only be prescribed if you have been previously diagnosed with asthma.
How does Pulmicort Turbohaler work?
Pulmicort Turbohalers are intended to treat inflammation of the airways caused by asthma. The inflammation is caused by an autoimmune response to triggers such as:
- Pollen
- Dust
- Animal dander
- Chest infections
- Cigarette smoke
- Exercise
- Physical pain
- Strong emotions (laughing and crying)
- Weather (temperature and humidity)
- Chemicals
- Pollution
When one of these triggers affects the body – often through inhalation, histamines, leukotrienes, and cytokines are released. This caused inflammation in the airways and increases the amount of mucus produced in the lungs and airways, reducing airflow to the lungs.
Pulmicort’s active ingredient, budesonide, is a corticosteroid which prevents inflammation and mucus secretion. Subsequently, the airways remain open and clear, making it easier to breathe.
How long does Pulmicort take to work?
Pulmicort begins to work within 24 to 48 hours, though the full effects may not be apparent until after a few weeks of continuous use.
